On completion of this programme, the diploma holders should be able to: Function as a foreman on a construction site Produce good civil engineering drawing Supervise concreting processes Carry out necessary tests on construction materials Interpret building drawings Interpret surveyor’s measurements. The Higher National Diploma programmes in Civil Engineering Technology are aimed at producing technologists with a good mastery of engineering approach in executing civil engineering works. Two options of the HND programmes available in the Department are Structural Engineering and Transportation Engineering. HND (CE) Structural Engineering The programme is designed such that on completion of the course of instructions, graduates are expected to have acquired the skills to perform the following civil engineering functions: Design simple structural elements and prepare detailed drawings of such elements with minimum supervision Carryout work of supervision and prepare progress reports on structural works Maintain comprehensive records of work-in-progress for the consumption of the contractors, clients or structural organizations Carryout accurate interpretation of technical data related to engineering structures during contract negotiations Carryout appropriate testing on structural materials. HND (CE) Transportation Engineering The programme is designed such that on completion of the course of instructions, graduates are expected to have acquired the skills to perform the following civil engineering functions: Test materials such as soils and concrete for the design of foundation and base course Carry out surveys for the construction of roads, air-fields and rail roads Design simple road schemes and prepare working drawings for their construction Set out road works, bridge abutments, culverts and similar jobs Supervise construction work in highways, aerodromes, bridges and railways Conduct traffic surveys and simple traffic management scheme in accordance with basic town planning principles. |
