The Federal Polytechnic Ilaro | Ogun State

The Industrial Liaison and Placement Unit coordinates the Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) and mobilization of prospective graduates for the National Youth Service Corps programme.  Both schemes are coordinate in collaboration with the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) and the Directorate of National Youth Corps, respectively.

The Federal Government Policy on technical education makes it mandatory for students of Polytechnics and Colleges of Technology pursuing courses in applied science, engineering and environmental studies to undergo skill training programme in industries for a period before obtaining their diplomas.  In pursuance of this policy, the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro attaches the ND I students in the specified disciplines to both the private and public establishments for a period of three to four months, as an integral part of their academic programmes.  This programme will:

• provide the students an avenue to acquire cognate practical experience, the needed experience in handling equipment and machinery that may not be available in the educational institution and will expose students to real life work situations;
• prepare the students for the industrial work situation they are to meet after graduation;
• make transition from school to the world of work easier, and enhance students contacts for later job placement;
• provide students with an opportunity to apply their knowledge in real work situation thereby bridging the gap between theory and practice; and
• enlist and strengthen employers, involvement in the entire education process and prepare students for employment in industry and commerce.

SIWES is open to all the 100-level students of Schools of Applied Science, Engineering and Environmental Studies.
